Recreational Facilities Update

The $13.8 million bond referendum to redevelop the West University Recreation Center, Colonial Park, and Community/Senior Center was passed by voters on November 4, 2008. The City is also fortunate to have $1 million available for the West University Place Recreation Center from the matching of funds of the Friends of West University Parks and the Lewis Family. There is a commitment to stay within the approved funding for these projects. The City is currently under contract with PGAL for design services and with Tellepsen for construction services.
The West U Recreation Center construction began in February 2009, with the goal of having the new facility open to the public by March 2010. The new recreation center will include a large, multi-purpose room, several smaller rooms for classes and fitness activities, cardio and weight room, multi-function sport courts, and bathroom facilities with access to the new year-round swimming pool.
In order to take advantage of current economic conditions in the construction industry, the City will begin redeveloping the new Colonial Park Pool and Recreation Center in September 2009, with expected completion in May 2010. The new pool will include a zero-depth entry, interactive play features, toddler slide, lily pad walkway, floating log, lounge and bench seating, lap lanes, and deep water amenities (climbing wall, drop slide, and diving board). The new recreation center will include two multi-purpose rooms, poolside concession area, bathroom facilities with access to the pool, and a park side restroom. The City will also be renovating the Community/Senior Center at this time.
